MARCUS LUTTRELL

Navy Seal

Most Navy SEALs go about their jobs without anyone ever knowing what it is they do. That’s because their missions are usually highly classified with the exact details kept tightly under wraps. But occasionally we get a look behind the curtain to catch a glimpse of what these extraordinary men are capable of accomplishing. Such was the case of Marcus Luttrell, a man whose story you probably already know even if you don’t recognize his name.

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Marcus joined the Navy in 1999 and after completing basic training, went on to become a corpsman. From there, he set his sights on joining the SEALs, completing his BUD/S training in 2000 and earning his Navy Special Warfare Insignia —his SEAL Trident— the following year. After that, he continued his training in a variety of areas before joining SEAL Team Five and getting deployed to Iraq in 2003. His job was to help in the hunt for WMDs and combat the rising Iraqi insurgency.

In 2005, Marcus was transferred to SEAL Team Ten and sent to Afghanistan as part of SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team One. Not long after he arrived in-country, he and three other SEALs were assigned to take part in a mission dubbed Operation Red Wings. Their objective was to disrupt resistance in the Kunar Province where a local Taliban warlord named Ahmad Shah was causing problems for the regional government.

Marcus and the other three SEALs formed a reconnaissance and surveillance team that would be inserted into a remote region of the Kunar Province. The plan was to drop them off about a mile or so from a village that they were tasked with observing, allowing the four men to set up camp in the hills and watch over the area closely. Their orders were to collect as much intel on the movement of local militia forces as possible without engaging the enemy unless there were no other options.

The SEALs fast-roped out of a helicopter and soon made their way to a favorable vantage point overlooking their target area. They settled in for the mission and tried to remain as stealthy as possible, all the while recording the movements of the Taliban forces, along with the comings and goings of its leadership.

Everything was going according to plan until local goat herders stumbled across the team’s covert position while moving their flock into the hills for grazing. The SEALs quickly grabbed the Afghani men but upon realizing that they were unarmed civilians, they let them go. The rules of engagement didn’t allow them to do much of anything else so all they could do was release the farmers and hope that they didn’t blow their cover.

Knowing that the goat herders were more than likely going to alert the local militia to the SEAL team’s presence, the four men dropped back and took cover higher up in the hills. They barely had enough time to find a secure location when a large group of heavily armed men were spotted coming up the hill to find them.
